Flashback: Looking back at bumper stickers

The back bumper of an automobile provides its owner with personal billboard space.

It's a very public bulletin board for all to read and discover the driver's interests, political opinions and philosophical mantras.

If nothing else is accomplished, at least the car following behind can relieve the boredom of being stuck in traffic by reading the bumper ahead.

Sometimes bumper stickers are laugh-out-loud funny or quirky. Others show an allegiance or affiliation. Still, others are more personal, relating to family, pets or faith.

Here are just a few bumper stickers that attracted the attention of The Oklahoman's photographers during the 1960s and '70s.

An automobile photographed in 1978 at the state Capitol is covered with stickers beyond just the bumper. Opryland, Arkansas, Maine and other states are represented along with a hodgepodge of other decals.
