The Flash star Grant Gustin has finished filming for the series.

The actor has played the speedy superhero for nine seasons of the Arrowverse show, plus a few crossover appearances, but now he's hung up the red and yellow. Quite literally.

In a video posted to his Instagram on March 7, Gustin put his costume on the rack, telling the camera mournfully: "That usually goes in my laundry, doesn't need to be washed now. Good-bye, bud."

The actor uploaded a further post to his page with photos from his last ever scene, which, fittingly, included one of him in costume with his arm around his wife Andrea Thoma and holding their daughter Juniper.

In a lengthy post, Gustin reflected on everything that the show and everyone working on it had achieved, and the aspects of it that he'll miss the most.

"I said goodbye to The Flash and my Flash family on Saturday," he wrote. "Very special day, with moments I will cherish for the rest of my life. My family got to see my last shot as The Flash - that’s something I could’ve never imagined nearly 10 years ago when I started this journey...

"I got a chance to thank the crew, who have worked longer hours than anyone can image and are the reason we were able to accomplish 184 episodes of The Flash. More than anything I’ll miss chatting and laughing in between takes(and sometimes during takes) with so many of them.

"Regardless of how challenging this journey was at times, I know I laughed every single day at work for the last 9 + years. I made lots of mistakes and did a lot of growing up on this journey."

He also cited people like Greg Berlanti and Geoff Johns for taking a chance on him, adding that he never took the opportunity for granted, and honestly admitted to feeling he didn't he didn't deserve it at times.

The actor then thanked the cast and the guest stars, whom he called the "unsung heroes", as well as the fans, expressing his hope that he'd continue to get more chances to meet them in the future.

Signing off, Gustin wrote: "Honored to have had the chance to play this iconic character. I gave it absolutely everything I had. That’s all for now."

There are less than 10 episodes of The Flash's final season left to air, with the big finale set to air on May 24 in the US.

The Flash airs on The CW in the US. Sky Showcase and NOW air the show in the UK.
