Flat Rock pedestrian struck and killed on Oct. 30 to be laid to rest

A pedestrian who was struck and killed by a vehicle on Oct. 30 on Spartanburg Highway will be laid to rest on Nov. 18.

Flat Rock's Dustin Grant Byrnside, 44, died at the scene of the accident, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Byrnside's cousin, Leanda Maillard, was on her way to work when she passed by the scene.

"Dustin is my cousin. Passed the scene on my way to work, later to find out what it was about. He was a good man. Please keep our family in your prayers," she said in a Facebook comment on BlueRidgeNow's Facebook page on Oct. 30.

Byrnside will be laid to rest at Stepp Family Cemetery, located at 1500 Stepp Mill Road in Hendersonville, with a 2 p.m. graveside service on Nov. 18, which is two days after his birthday.

Byrnside was just a couple of weeks away from his 45th birthday when the accident occurred. The Highway Patrol reported that he was walking on the shoulder of Spartanburg Highway when he was hit by a truck driven by Jason Ryan Blackwell, 46, of East Flat Rock.

"Mr. Blackwell initially left the scene but then returned to his residence approximately three hours later. His vehicle was located by the Henderson County Sheriff's Office, and he was located in his residence and taken into custody without incident," First Sgt. Daniel J. Wakefield of the Highway Patrol told the Times-News Oct. 30.

Byrnside was a native of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and is preceded in death by his parents, Rickey Lee Byrnside Sr. and Susie Lucinda Stepp, as well as his brother, Steven Eugene Bolman, according to his obituary from Mountain View Cremation & Funeral Care in Arden.

According to his obituary, Byrnside dedicated many years of his life to Pro Scape Inc. as a landscaper.

"He took great pride in his work and always had a keen eye for transforming outdoor spaces into beautiful havens. When he wasn't busy beautifying landscapes, Dustin indulged in his love for the outdoors. Hiking and fishing were among his favorite pastimes, providing him with a sense of peace and tranquility," his obituary said.

Byrnside is survived by his children, Madison Seaira Grace Byrnside, Tyler Warren and Austin Amos Kennedy Byrnside; brothers, William Byrnside (Bree), Rickey Byrnside Jr. (Cheraw), Joseph Byrnside, Sam Byrnside (Brooke) and Jasson Byrnside; as well as his sisters, Tracey Byrnside, Opal Byrnside, Kimberly Byrnside, Cynthia Bass (Tyler) and Rickesa Byrnside.
