Flathead first, Glacier sixth at Pacific NW Classic

Jan. 8—SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Another day, another tournament win for the Flathead Brave Brawlers. The Braves bested 18 teams to take top honors at the Pacific Northwest Classic, held at University High School in Spokane Valley.

Out of eight wrestlers that made the finals, Gabe Lake (160), Noah Poe-Hatten (182), Sawyer Troupe (195) and Anders Thompson (170). Anders Thompson faced his twin Gunnar in the final, and Gunnar forfeited to his brother.

Aiden Downing got caught in a pin in the 126 final and ended up second. Logan Stansberry (145) and Cade Troupe (152) were also second. At 120, Will Barnes was fourth.

"Overall, the Braves had some great competition and got in some quality matches before heading back to Montana to wrestle in the Rocky Mountain in Missoula next weekend," Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said. "We still got some work to do but this team is really coming together and just seems to fight for every point. All the hard work over the off-season is really showing in our wrestling."

Glacier was missing three wrestlers with injuries, but the 10 left put up a strong showing to earn a sixth place finish.

Teegan Vasquez continued his dominant season by winning the 132 bracket and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Josh Melton was second at 120, and Kaleb Shine (152) and Garrett Bosch (113) were fourth.

"Good first weekend out of the break for the Wolfpack," Glacier coach Ross Dankers said. "Josh Melton wrestled really well to make the finals. He is really clicking on his feet and feeling confident. We had three of our starting varsity athletes out this weekend due to injury and to get sixth with some pretty tough teams at the top I was happy with that."
