Fleetwood forfeits six girls volleyball victories

Oct. 14—Fleetwood has informed District 3 officials it has forfeited six girls volleyball wins and eight games in all because it used an ineligible player.

The forfeits came after it was revealed that a foreign exchange student who played on the girls volleyball team was living with Fleetwood coach Ron Humer and his family, a violation of PIAA rules.

Fleetwood athletic director Matt Diehl wrote to District 3 to inform officials it would forfeit wins over Antietam on Sept. 9, Conrad Weiser on Sept. 21, Schuylkill Valley on Sept. 23, Wyomissing on Sept. 28, Brandywine Heights on Sept. 30 and Berks Catholic on Oct. 7.

Diehl also said Fleetwood has forfeited games to Berks Catholic on Sept. 16 and Twin Valley on Sept. 22, matches Fleetwood had lost.

Diehl released a statement on Monday after meeting with volleyball players and coaches. In the statement Diehl said: "PIAA is requiring any contests participated in by the ineligible player must be forfeited." He later said, "I know this is unfortunate, and I am sorry I have to share this information."

The forfeits have a major impact on the BCIAA girls volleyball playoffs, which are scheduled to start Thursday, Oct. 24.

Fleetwood was 9-1 in Berks II and tied for first place with Berks Catholic. The forfeits drop Fleetwood to 3-7 in league play and into a tie with Conrad Weiser for fifth place.

Schuylkill Valley moved up to second place and Brandywine Heights moved into third for the division's final playoff berth.

Overall, Fleetwood fell to 3-9 and dropped to 26th in the District 3 Class 3A power rankings. Fleetwood had been 10th in power rankings with a 9-3 overall record. The top 16 teams qualify for the District 3 Tournament.

Last season, Fleetwood won the Berks II title and advanced to the District 3 Class 3A semifinals.
