Fletcher man dies after South Carolina boating accident

OCONEE COUNTY, S.C. -  A Fletcher man died after a boating accident in South Carolina, according to the county coroner's office.

Scott Johnson, 60, died in the emergency department at Prisma–Oconee Memorial Hospital June 5 at 5:08 p.m., according to a news release from Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis.

The accident happened on Lake Keowee.

At 3:32 pm, Oconee 911 Communications received a call reporting a person had been struck by the propeller of a boat near Fall Creek Landing. Johnson was "extricated" from the lake into the boat and taken to the Fall Creek Landing access. He sustained cardiac arrest prior to EMS arrival, the release says.

A post mortem examination was conducted June 6 "to assist with the death investigation," according to the release, and it concluded that he died from exsanguination — extensive blood loss —due to laceration of the right femoral artery, according to the release.

The incident is being investigated by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the release says.

His manner of death will be classified as accidental, the release says.
