Flies, cockroaches, pink slime found during Myrtle Beach area restaurant inspections

Each week restaurant inspections are performed in the Myrtle Beach area.

A complete report of routine and follow-up inspections is provided to The Sun News.

These inspections are unannounced to facilities.

Inspectors are making sure food safety compliance is being met.

Routine Inspection - Unannounced and conducted on a frequency determined by the facility’s Risk Category on a frequency of one to four times a year.

Follow-Up Inspection - Conducted within ten days of a Routine Inspection that requires follow-up verification.

The following had follow-up inspections the week of May 29 - June 1:

  1. Abuleo’s Mexican Restaurant located at 740 Coastal Grand Circle, Myrtle Beach, had an unannounced routine inspection on May 22 and scored 78 percent “B” grade. A follow-up inspection was done on June 1 and scored 96 percent “A” grade, according to the SC Food Grade Report.

  2. Fajitas Mexican Restaurant located at 1207 3rd Ave. S., Unit C, Myrtle Beach, had an unannounced routine inspection on May 23 and scored 78 percent “B” grade. A follow-up inspection was done on June 2 and scored a 96 percent “A” grade, according to the SC Food Grade Report.

  3. Saigon Cafe Restaurant located at 1943-A Mr. Joe White Ave., Myrtle Beach, had an unannounced routine inspection on May 23 and scored 72 percent “C” grade. Here is what inspectors found: “Observed uncovered drink and evidence of smoking in kitchen. Unclean surfaces of food slicer and interior of ice machine, bowl being stored in hand sink. Kitchen - shelf - cabbage wraps being stored 83 degrees. In the kitchen refrigerator, chicken - 52 degrees, beef - 50 degrees, egg casserole - 59 degrees. Observed ready to eat noodles and melon in refrigerator without date marking. Observed back door left open, flies in facility and roaches, food products being stored directly on floor. Grease buildup of sides of cooking equipment. Observed grease accumulation on surfaces of shelves. Observed area in back of kitchen being used as a living area.” A follow-up inspection is scheduled to be performed within 10 days, according to the SC Food Safety Report. Saigon Cafe had a follow-up inspection and did not receive an “A” grade.

  4. Harry The Hats located at 351 Lake Arrowhead Road, Myrtle Beach, had an unannounced routine inspection on May 24 and scored 80 percent “B” grade. According to SC Food Grade Report Harry The Hats did not have a follow-up inspection as of June 2.

This week inspectors did not award 4 area restaurants with an “A” grade. Each of these restaurants had violations and will be receiving a follow-up inspection within the next 10 days. One restaurant scores “C” grade two weeks in a row.

  1. Deroma’s Pizzeria located at 10025 Ocean Highway, Unit 334, Pawleys Island, had a routine inspection on June 2 and received 84 percent “B” grade. Here is what inspectors found: “Employee observed putting on gloves without washing hands. Can opener blade observed with build-up. Stand mixer observed with buildup around bottom and sides. Cardboard being used on wall behind pizza cutting area, surface soiled.” A follow-up inspection is scheduled to be performed within 10 days according to the SC Food Safety Report.

  2. Pizza De Roma located at 806 N. Oak St., Myrtle Beach, had a routine inspection on June 1 and received 80 percent “B” grade. Here is what inspectors found: “No paper towels at kitchen and employee hand sinks. No soap at kitchen and employee hand sinks. Hand sink blocked by prep table. Can opener blade and mount has accumulation of debris. Could not provide product thermometer. Back door propped open. Pizza boxes stored on floor. Bags of flour need to be closed securely during storage. Could not provide test kit for sanitizer. Accumulation of debris on shelves under prep counters. Accumulation of food debris on walls behind prep tables. Accumulation of debris under cook line.” A follow-up inspection is scheduled to be performed within 10 days according to the SC Food Safety Report.

  3. Saigon Cafe Restaurant located at 1943-A Mr. Joe White Ave., Myrtle Beach, had a routine inspection on May 23 and scored 72 percent “C” grade. (Details above)

  4. Saigon Cafe Restaurant located at 1943-A Mr. Joe White Ave., Myrtle Beach, had a follow-up inspection on June 2 and scored 75 percent “C” grade. Here is what inspectors found: “Observed employee wrapping lettuce wraps with bare hands, no further cooking. Observed duck eggs stored at room temperature. Observed spoiled bananas in standing refrigerator. Observed opened container of chicken stored on top of sealed pork. Unclean surfaces of food slicer. Observed several roaches and flies in the kitchen. Observed grease buildup of sides of cooking equipment. Observed grease accumulation on surfaces of shelves. Soiled floor surfaces on floor in corners and under equipment. Observed rice noodles in container dated 5/31 and new product added to container today.” Another follow-up inspection will be performed within the next 10 days according to the SC Food Safety Report.

  5. Wild Wing Plantation located at 1000 Wild Wing Plantation, Conway, had a routine inspection on June 1 and scored 83 percent “B” grade. Here is what inspectors found: “Dump strainers observed in hand sinks behind the bar. No hand soap provided at employee hand sink behind the bar. No hand towels observed at employee hand sink behind the bar. Ice machine observed with mildew/pink slime build-up on the deflector plate. Hot dog rollers observed with build up. Cases of food in the walk freezer observed with ice build-up. Case of bread observed stored on the walk in freezer floor. Single service items stored behind the bar observed not stored inverted. Inside of bun warmer observed with splatter/spillage. Walk in freezer door observed not closing, possibly warped. Ice build up observed around door even after heat strip replaced. Door being held closed with screwdriver.” A follow-up inspection will be performed within the next 10 days according to the SC Food Safety Report.

“INSPECTION KEY”

A | 100 - 88 - The retail food establishment earned more than 87 points. Food safety practices appeared to meet the requirements of Regulation 61-25.

B | 87 - 78 - The retail food establishment earned 78-87 points. Food safety practices need improvement.

C | 77 & Below - The retail establishment earned less than 78 points. Food safety practices need significant improvement.
