Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. The latest destination from Myrtle Beach International Airport is the one and only Manchester, New Hampshire. Spirit Airlines and MYR have announced that daily flights between Manchester and MYR have begun. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport is a small airport about 50 miles north of Boston that offers an alternative to dealing with Logan Airport traffic and headaches. MYR is doing a themed goodie bag giveaway today until 3 p.m. to celebrate the new destination. (WMBF) (Facebook)

  2. Realizing its application would probably get rejected, G3 Engineering withdrew its rezoning request that would have allowed 11 new single-family homes near Carolina Forest High School. The company's management wanted to avoid taking up time at more meetings, after it became clear that residents were not in favor of the proposal. The property is zoned for commercial use. 3. At a bond hearing on Wednesday, the man arrested in the Hollywood Wax museum shooting said he thought the gun was a prop used in a museum performance. Investigators say the man and his children were inside the Haunted House section of the museum when a mishap occurred during part of the performance, and a gun skidded along the floor. The man picked up and fired the gun, hitting a museum worker in the shoulder. The man then gave the gun to a minor child. He has been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Additional charges are likely. It is not known who the gun belonged to or where it came from. (WMBF)

  4. During this week's Myrtle Beach Planning Commission meeting, the amount of time the public will be given to submit input on Community Appearance Board projects was changed. The original 10 business days input deadline was shortened to 10 calendar days. The commission is asking city council to create a committee to review the submission process for Community Appearance Board issues. (WBTW)

  5. Teddy Bear, the local abandoned dog that had terminal cancer and became an internet sensation, has died. Teddy was in the care of the Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach after being abandoned outside its facility in July of 2021 at the age of 15, in ill health. The staff of HSNMB and more than a dozen businesses and organizations on the Grand Strand helped Teddy complete a "bucket list" all around the Grand Strand as thousands followed along on social media over the past nine months. Special thanks to HSNMB for taking such good care of this lucky dog. (Facebook) (WBTW)

From my notebook:

  • Coastal South Carolina Department of Natural Resources K9 Rio got some cool new protective gear, thanks to a donation from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. The nonprofit organization gave a custom-fit protective vest to Rio. The vest is embroidered in recognition of K9 Gabo of Jonesboro, Arkansas, who was shot five times during a SWAT operation in 2018. The vest saved Gabo's life that day, and the dog died in 2020 after an illness. (WBTW)

  • The nonprofit organization, SC Mothers Against Violence has been struggling to make ends meet for the past two years. The organization, started in 2008 by Elizabeth Bowens, helps people who have lost loved ones due to gun violence. Funds are low due to COVID, and now inflation, causing financial struggles the organization has not experienced before. SC Mothers Against Violence hosted a fundraiser in Surfside Beach at Five Guys this week, and hopes to have more fundraisers going forward. Donations and volunteers are appreciated. (WMBF)

  • Following up on preliminary reports from North Myrtle Beach City Council's 2023 budget retreat, it has been confirmed that North Myrtle Beach residents won’t see a tax increase this year. The city expects expenditures to total more than $162 million, and three major projects are included in the new budget: stormwater drainage at 18th Avenue North, expansion of Parks and Recreation, including a splash park and family entertainment complex at NMB Park & Sports Complex, and an emergency operations and data management center to be built on the west side of the ICW. The company's stores dot the landscape from the NC coast to Isle of Palms, and it all started in Myrtle Beach in 1981. Thanks for following along and staying informed on this Thursday! I won't be around tomorrow, but I'll see you in your mailbox Saturday morning.

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
