Some aircraft began taking off again at Frankfurt Airport on Wednesday afternoon, as winter weather that forced flights to halt eased.

Frankfurt Airport, Germany's busiest, halted take-offs earlier in the day after freezing rain made it too difficult to safely de-ice aircraft before departure. The airport also temporarily halted landings because of limited parking space for grounded aircraft.

Some landings are planned for the coming hours, a spokesman for airport operator told dpa on Wednesday afternoon.

Hundreds of flights have already been cancelled at Frankfurt Airport, which is among Europe's busiest airports and a major hub for carrier Lufthansa.

The German Weather Service (DWD) on Wednesday had issued the highest severe weather warning level for the area including Frankfurt, as well as other regions of Germany, due to the extreme risk of black ice.
