A flood advisory has been issued for communities along the St. Clair River from Marysville to Algonac.

The National Weather Service said an ice blockage was identified upstream from Algonac.

The advisory is in place until 8:15 a.m. Wednesday.

St. Clair County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Director Justin Westmiller said a Canadian Coast Guard cutter is helping a 1,000-foot freighter through the ice as of shortly after noon.

He said another three downbound vessels are ice-capable and shouldn't need assistance.

Westmiller said while the ice is thick, flooding has been minimal due to water levels being between 18 and 20 inches lower than last year.

He said it is a "very different situation than we were in last year."
