Flood sweeps DoorDash driver’s car down a mile-long tunnel below New Jersey town

A DoorDash delivery driver who tried to drive through high water ended up on a wild ride Monday through a New Jersey city’s storm drain system, WNBC reports.

A raging flash flood swept the Toyota Prius toward a tunnel, firefighters told NorthJersey.com. Nathalia Bruno, 24, jumped out of her sinking car but was carried into the drain with it.

“(The) water is traveling at 30 mph,” said Passaic Fire Chief Patrick Trentacost, according to the publication. “When it floods, it floods.”

The water swept Bruno and her Prius for a mile beneath the city before dumping her into the Passaic River, NorthJersey.com reported.

Bruno tried to swim to shore but became tired, WNBC reported. She eventually floated ashore across the river in Rutherford, New Jersey, about 5:20 p.m. A nearby resident called 911.

“It’s an amazing story,” said Rutherford Detective Capt. Patrick Feliciano, reported the Garfield-Lodi Daily Voice. “It’s a miracle that she survived.”

Bruno was taken to a hospital to be evaluated, according to the publication.

Passaic firefighters later found her Prius stuck in the drainage tunnels beneath city streets, NorthJersey.com reported.

DoorDash promised to help Bruno with her expenses in a statement, WNBC reported.

“At DoorDash, we take the safety of our community extremely seriously, and our thoughts and sincerest condolences are with the Dasher who endured this frightening event,” the statement says, according to the station.

“We have reached out to offer our support during her recovery and will be providing her with financial assistance as well as occupational accident insurance to cover expenses incurred,” the statement says, WNBC reported.
