Much of North Jersey is under a flood watch into Wednesday, adding to an already rainy stretch of weather.

Tuesday marked a one-day reprieve for the drenched region that saw many places get several inches of rain since Friday.

The National Weather Service issued the flood watch on Tuesday and said there's the potential for heavy rain and thunderstorms. The forecast shows a greater chance of rain starting early Wednesday morning.

Bob Ziff of the North Jersey Weather Observers reported the following rain totals since Friday:

  • Ramsey: 4.24 inches

  • Cedar Grove: 2.47 inches

  • Bergenfield: 2.41 inches

  • Wantage: 2.26 inches

  • Somerset: 1.73 inches

  • North Haledon: 1.62 inches

A normal amount for the whole month of September is 4.23 inches, Ziff said.

The weather made its presence known, including causing a temporary shelter in place at MetLife Stadium ahead of the New York Jets game Monday.

The rain also led to significant flooding in Englewood Monday, particularly at the ShopRite parking lot. Mayor Michael Wildes posted a photo of water up to a car's headlights in the parking lot but said the supermarket stayed dry.

Englewood fire Chief Jeff Kaplan said the city had some flash flooding near West Street, Nathaniel Place, South Van Brunt Street and South Dean Street but the night remained relatively "uneventful" considering the quick rate of rain.

Westwood Mayor Raymond Arroyo said the town seemed like a hyper-localized rain event with over 3 inches of rain.

Five motorists had to be rescued from their cars from flooding on Old Hook Road and Charles Street on Friday by the Westwood police and fire departments. Two vehicles were able to get out on their own with help from the first responders, but the other three had to be towed out, said Arroyo.

Fortunately there is not a high chance of rain for North Jersey after Wednesday for the next week.
