As has become a trend in New Jersey, it will be a wet weekend, at least to start.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for North Jersey from 2 a.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday because flooding is possible.

Rainfall is expected from “very early” Friday morning into the afternoon, said meteorologist David Stark of the National Weather Service.

“Beginning tonight through Friday, a slow-moving coastal storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall and localized flash and river flooding to parts of Northern and Central New Jersey, especially urban areas and neighborhoods with poor drainage,” Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement Thursday night.

“I have directed my team to prepare for the storm and coordinate in advance with county and local officials. I encourage all New Jerseyans to monitor local weather updates and remember to never drive or walk through flooded roads.”

The flood watch is in effect for much of the Metro New York area, including Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties in New Jersey.

Rainy Friday

The region can expect anywhere from two to four inches of rain with some places seeing an excess of five inches, especially in the early hours through the morning commute.

Stark said that the rain is expected to remain steady but lighter in the afternoon and into the evening but there will be “significant rain in short time” which could cause flooding in areas that typically see problems as well as in rivers, creeks and streams.

The rain will be lighter rain Friday evening and night and is expected to be mostly over by Saturday morning though a light rain drizzle could remain.

“It will improve during the day Saturday but will be cloudy even if it’s not raining,” he said.

Sunny Sunday

The weekend won’t be a total washout. A jolt of much needed sunshine is expected to return Sunday with highs reaching into the 70s.

That sunny weather should remain into early next week as highs are expected to stay in the 70s.
