Orlando ranks No. 2 among most desired summer travel destinations for Americans

It’s hardly a surprise that Florida has dominated the 10 most desired summertime travel destinations for Americans on Trip Advisor’s 2021 Summer Travel Index — but none took the top spot.

The wide-ranging travel survey found that beach destinations are popular; all but two of the survey’s top 10 travel spots have beaches.

Three Florida cities are among the top five, and Florida was the only U.S. state to rank more than once.

Orlando, home of Disney World, came in at No. 2 among the most desired summer travel destinations for Americans, with Key West at No. 4, and Miami Beach at No. 5.

Cancun, Mexico, ranked No. 1.

Other cities in Mexico made the top 10 — Playa del Carmen at No. 7, Cabo San Lucas at No. 8, and Tulum at No. 9.

Rounding out the top 10 were Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Las Vegas at No. 3 and No. 6, respectively.

According to Trip Advisor’s findings, 67% of Americans are planning to travel this summer, with 43% planning to drive and 19% planning to fly. That’s a 4% increase in planned air travel from the spring survey.

Among those planning a summer trip, 74% said they would travel domestically and 13% internationally, according Trip Advisor.

Millennials, those between 25 and 40 years old, are the group that expressed the most desire to travel, with 72% indicating they are planning a summertime trip.

Trip Advisor stated that the data was compiled through an online survey of 2,500 consumers and search data from TripAdvisor.com and its affiliated sites between Jan. 1 and March 26.
