This Florida city nabbed the top spot on 'Alternative' Romantic Destinations list. See why

Between honeymoons or weekend trips, most couples have ready to have a few key destinations in their arsenal, such as Maui, New Orleans, and New York City. However, some research is finding that quite a bit of partners have recently been on the lookout for lesser-known, yet equally enchanting locations for their next romantic getaways.

In a recent poll of America's favorite 'alternate' romantic destinations, St. Augustine took home the number one spot among 175 cities across the nation.

Travel website for couples Honeymoon Always commissioned a poll involving 3,000 couples to ascertain which alternative romantic destinations they are most eager to visit this year.

How did St. Augustine secure its spot on top alternative romantic destinations?

The historic St. John County city of St. Augustine came in first place in the Honeymoon Always poll. Organizers write that this city offers a romantic ambiance like no other, with its rich character, quaint cafes, and picturesque waterfront.

St. Augustine is sometime's referred to as the "Nation's Oldest City." Visit Florida's website says it was founded in September 1565 by Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles of Spain and is the longest continually inhabited European-founded city in the United States.

Its history only adds to the charm, boasting a rich past, with cobblestone streets, Spanish colonial architecture, and centuries-old landmarks. They suggest that couples can take leisurely strolls hand-in-hand through the historic district, immersing themselves in the city by visiting charming boutiques and savoring delectable cuisine at intimate restaurants.

They add that the city’s scenic coastline provides breathtaking sunsets, pristine beaches, and opportunities for romantic walks along the shore.

What other Florida cities made the list?

Out of the 175 U.S. cities, only one other Florida made the list of top alternate romantic destinations.

Naples came in 31st on Honeymoon Always list. Perched on the Gulf of Mexico, organizers said Naples earned its rank due to its "charming and idyllic setting that makes it an excellent alternative romantic destination for couples."

Known for its sunsets, sandy beaches, and luxurious resorts, they further elaborate that Naples provides a perfect blend of natural beauty and sophisticated elegance. Couples can embark on an array of activities, such as leisurely strolls hand-in-hand along the iconic beaches, taking in the panoramic views and gentle ocean breezes.

They also highlight the city's vibrant arts scene and cultural attractions, such as the renowned Naples Botanical Garden, which offer couples the opportunity to immerse themselves in beauty and inspiration.
