Members of Florida’s congressional delegation are responding to the new indictment of former President Donald Trump.

The charges stem from the investigation into classified documents taken from the White House and kept in his Mar-a-Lago home.

“It seems to be uneven application of justice and the weaponization of our justice system,” said US Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL 6th District).

Waltz, who has endorsed Trump in the 2024 race, points to recent discoveries of classified documents held onto by other elected officials, including President Joe Biden as evidence of unequal treatment.

“For me, this is incredibly disturbing and damaging the American people’s trust, not just in our justice system, but all of our national security apparatus,” said Waltz.

On the other side of the aisle, Florida Congresswoman Lois Frankel (D-FL 22nd District) urged the public to be patient and trust the judicial system.

“I think it’s a very sad day when a former President gets indicted, but everyone needs to be held accountable to the law,” said Frankel.

Florida Republican US Senator Rick Scott was in St. Augustine Friday.

When asked about the indictment he called for transparency from the US Department of Justice.

“Don’t be a black hole. Give people good information. You work for the American public. We have a right to know exactly why you are doing what you’re doing. I said that when they raided Mar-A-Lago. I said just tell people why you did that and you didn’t raise other places,” said Scott.

It’s still unclear how the latest indictment will impact Trump’s bid for a second term as President.

After the New York indictment dropped he skyrocketed in the polls.

The former President is expected to appear in federal court this coming Tuesday in Miami.
