Florida Coronavirus Update: 7,104 New Cases

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida health officials reported 7,104 additional cases of the coronavirus Sunday, though most of the testing sites in the state shut down over the weekend ahead of what once was Hurricane Isaias.

Florida health officials reported a total of 7,084 deaths, up from 7,022 deaths a day earlier — an increase of 62 new deaths over the previous 24-hour period.

Sunday's increase followed Friday's record of 257 new deaths — breaking Thursday's record of 253 deaths, Wednesday's record of 216 deaths, Tuesday's record of 186 deaths and the July 23 record of 173 deaths last week.

Health officials reported 487,132 cases of the virus Sunday, up from 480,028 cases a day earlier.

Health officials reported 27,150 hospitalizations in the state, up from 26,972 hospitalizations over the previous 24 hours. That represents an increase of 178 more hospitalizations than reported a day earlier.

Twenty-two of Florida's 67 counties reported 63 new deaths Sunday, though St. Lucie County reported one fewer death.

Sunday's increase compares to 179 new deaths Saturday, 270 new deaths Friday (state health officials reported 257), 253 new deaths Thursday, 216 new deaths reported Wednesday, 185 new deaths reported Tuesday (Florida health officials reported 186), 78 new deaths Monday (state health officials reported 77) and 77 new deaths last Sunday.

Miami-Dade County reported 22 new deaths. Palm Beach County did not report any new deaths. Neighboring Broward County reported three new deaths. Those three counties are considered the epicenter of Florida's outbreak.

Hillsborough County reported six new deaths. Martin County reported three new deaths, as did Putnam County and Seminole County. Alachua County reported two new deaths, as did Brevard County, Monroe County, Orange County, Pinellas County, Polk County and Volusia County.

Citrus County reported one new death, as did Duval County, Gadsden County, Hendry County, Jackson County, Manatee County, Osceola County, Pasco County and St. Johns County.

Florida reported a 13.07 percent positive test rate for the virus Saturday as the number of tests reached 3,726,562.

Miami-Dade, which includes Miami and Miami Beach, reported 122,690 cases of the virus. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 57,975 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes Palm Beach, West Palm and Boca Raton, reported 34,226 cases.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 30,118 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 29,699 cases.
