Florida Coronavirus Update: 8,109 New Cases
TALLAHASSEE, FL — One day after setting a new single-day record for the most deaths reported in any 24-hour period, Florida health officials reported another 212 new deaths Wednesday as health officials also reported 8,109 new cases of the virus.
The number of new cases — but not the number of deaths — was skewed by the results from one laboratory in Miami, according to health officials. Wednesday's total included more than 4,000 cases of the virus dating back to June 23 from Niznik Lab Corp.
"Everyone tested by Niznik Lab Corp. has received their results and have continuously been receiving results over the past seven weeks," state health officials said. "The backlog of testing data from Niznik Lab Corp. is a reporting issue that has been corrected." Miami-Dade's positive case total rose by 4,141 new cases partly as a result of the reporting issue.
Florida's death toll climbed to 8,765 from 8,553 a day earlier. The one-day record of 276 reported deaths was set Tuesday. State health officials reported another 132 deaths as of Wednesday involving non-Florida residents who died in Florida.
The total number of coronavirus cases in Florida climbed to 550,901 as of Wednesday, up from 542,792 cases a day earlier.
Thirty-seven of Florida's 67 counties reported 226 new deaths Wednesday (state health officials reported 212). That compares with 276 new deaths reported Tuesday, 91 new deaths Monday, 83 new deaths Sunday (state health officials reported 77), 182 new deaths Saturday, 180 new deaths Friday, 122 new deaths Thursday and 221 new deaths last Wednesday (health officials reported 220).
