Florida deputy K-9 remains in ‘critical condition’ after being shot in line of duty

MARION COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida sheriff’s office is asking for continued prayers as their K-9, Leo, remains in critical condition after he was shot by a suspect over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 900 block of Northeast 144th Court in Silver Springs at about 9 a.m. regarding an incident involving a suspect accused of battery by strangulation.

When deputies arrived, they found the suspect in the home’s backyard, where he allegedly began firing his gun toward deputies. The sheriff’s office K-9, Leo, was injured during the shooting.

“Leo isn’t just a member of our force; he’s family. His loyalty, courage, and unwavering dedication to his duty embody the very essence of what it means to serve and protect. His sacrifice today reminds us of the dangers our deputies face each day to keep our community safe,” the sheriff’s office said Saturday.

On Sunday, MCSO shared an update on Leo’s condition, saying the K-9 is “still stable with good vitals but is still in critical condition.” The sheriff’s office said Leo’s handler Cpl. Tortora has been by “his side through it all.”

“K-9 Leo trained right here on this course. He was trained to fight crime, to help those in need, and to protect his handler…..at all cost. Saturday, Leo did just that. He fearlessly charged toward someone who was threatening my deputies with a gun,” the sheriff’s office said on Monday.

Gifts and cards for Leo and his handler can be dropped off at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Central Operations on Monday or mailed in.
