Florida gas prices: Expect to pay more at the pump than any other Memorial Day weekend in history

Despite Florida gas prices inching away from record highs this week as commuters gear up for the Memorial Day travel weekend, they're still the holiday's most expensive.

AAA Auto Club Group is forecasting roughly 100,000 more Floridians to take a road trip this Memorial Day — 5.4% more than last year’s holiday weekend.

On Sunday, the average price for gasoline in Florida was $4.48 per gallon, according to AAA's weekly report on gas prices and trends. The state average dipped 3 cents after setting a new record high price of $4.51 per gallon last week.

Prices at the pump: The average gas price is above $4 in every state. How long will they continue to rise?

"Even though pump prices have moved slightly lower, gas prices on Memorial Day are still forecast to be the holiday's most expensive yet," said AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins, spokesman, in a statement.

He said a combination of tightening global supplies and strengthening demand are the main culprits behind this unprecedented pain at the pump.

"Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a quick end in sight," he added. "Gas prices are likely to continue fluctuating throughout the summer and remain well above year-ago levels."

Before this year, AAA logged the highest Memorial Day average gas price set in 2008 at $3.93 per gallon. Commuters paid an average price of $2.86 per gallon in 2021; the state average was $2.60 in 2019 and $2.91 in 2018.

Although air travel is expected to have a strong rebound, AAA is reporting 90% of holiday travelers are expected to drive to their destination.
