Florida Governor DeSantis Says He Will 'Facilitate Transport' of Migrants to 'Sanctuary Jurisdictions'
At a news conference in Okaloosa County, Florida, on Thursday, September 15, Gov Ron DeSantis addressed reports of migrants arriving in Massachusetts from Florida.
The governor’s communications director, Taryn Fenske, told Fox News on Wednesday, “Florida can confirm the two planes with illegal immigrants that arrived in Martha’s Vineyard today were part of the state’s relocation program to transport illegal immigrants to sanctuary destinations.”
Video posted by DeSantis on Thursday shows the governor talking about relocating migrants at a press event in Okaloosa County, saying, “We are not a sanctuary state, and we will gladly facilitate the transport of illegal immigrants to sanctuary jurisdictions.”
The governor continued, “All those people in DC and New York were beating their chests when Trump was president, saying they were so proud to be sanctuary jurisdictions, saying how bad it is to have a secure border. The minute even a small fraction of what those border towns deal with every day is brought to their front door, they all of the sudden go berserk.”
When faced with criticism asking why Florida did not notify the Massachusetts government of the migrants’ arrival, DeSantis’s deputy press secretary responded, “Do the cartels that smuggle humans call Florida or Texas before illegal immigrants wash up on our shores or cross over the border?”
The press conference came after a report in a local Martha’s Vineyard newspaper in which one migrant from Venezuela said a refugee association had put the group on a plane in Texas. Two Massachusetts state representatives were also quoted as saying the migrants originated in Texas.
