Florida high school football: Updated 2022 all-state, all-recruit team

Let's try this one more time.

With the 2021 season over and National Signing Day is fast approaching, it seemed like a good time to revisit my all-recruit team.

The basic concept is simple: 25 players (11 offense, 11 defense, kicker, punter, athlete) who are both outstanding high school football players as well as being high-level recruits.

Preseason list: High school football: A 2022 all-recruit team using only one p per school

Super 24: Meet Northeast Florida's leading high school football recruits in the 2022 class

We also added a couple rules to keep things interesting.

First, I could pick only one player per high school (so no stacking the offensive line with IMG players and loading up on Chaminade-Madonna's defense). It also creates some strategic challenges.

Second, players have to actually play specific positions (so you can't grab five left tackles and call them offensive linemen).

Finally — and this wasn't a requirement on the preseason team — players had to play at least half the high school season. That removes several players from our preseason squad, including top-ranked defensive lineman Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy and speedy wideout CJ Smith.

Ok. That's enough of the rules. Let's get to the squad.

QB Davin Wydner, Cocoa

Preseason pick: Wydner

The 6-foot-5 signal caller made quite the impression in his lone season at Cocoa. Wydner, who remains unsigned, set a school record with 3,529 yards and threw 22 touchdown passes against one of the toughest schedules in the state.

Lake Gibson running back Jaylon Glover looks for an opening in the first quarter against Lake Mary.

RB Jaylon Glover, Lake Gibson

Preseason pick: Terrence Gibbs, Winter Park

Selected the Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Football, Glover is an absolute workhorse. He rushed for 2,377 yards on 312 carries and scored 29 rushing touchdowns in 2021. The Utah signee had at least 19 carries in every game and scored three touchdowns in five different games.

Tyler Booker, the No. 1 offensive lineman in the state, signed with Alabama in December.
Tyler Booker, the No. 1 offensive lineman in the state, signed with Alabama in December.

OT Tyler Booker, IMG

Preseason pick: Austin Firestone, Niceville

The Alabama signee was the highest-rated lineman on the USA Today Florida Network's top 100 all season and did a great job protecting AJ Duffy and creating holes for Kaytron Allen and Co. Safety Kamari Wilson was the IMG player on the preseason team, but I'm taking Booker this time at a premium position.

Miami Central offensive lineman Daughtry Richardson became the fifth OL in FSU's 2022 class when he committed on July 25, 2021.
Miami Central offensive lineman Daughtry Richardson became the fifth OL in FSU's 2022 class when he committed on July 25, 2021.

OG Daughtry Richardson, Miami Central

Preseason pick: Tre'Quan Alexander, Jesuit

The Rockets moved the Florida State signee from tackle to guard this season and he continued to play at a very high level. Richardson helped Central win the Class 5A state championship in December.

C Chauncey Kamakea, Godby

Preseason pick: Kamakea

The preseason pick at center doesn't change. The 6-foot-2, 280-pound lineman, who signed with Georgia State in December, can play multiple positions on the interior. He's strong, athletic and does a good job of getting to the second level.

Four-star offensive lineman Julian Armella chose Florida State on the first day of the early signing period.
Four-star offensive lineman Julian Armella chose Florida State on the first day of the early signing period.

OG Julian Armella, St. Thomas Aquinas

Preseason pick: Jeremiah Jackson, Kathleen

The Florida State signee was a tackle on the preseason team but has the ability to move inside to either guard spot. Armella, who helped Aquinas repeat as Class 7A state champions, is strong and plays with a nasty streak that is valued in offensive linemen.

Matt McCoy at practice
Matt McCoy at practice

OT Matt McCoy, Creekside

Preseason pick: Armella

McCoy might not have the same name recognition as some other tackles in the state, but go ahead and turn on the tape. McCoy is athletic, moves his feet well and has been one of the fastest rising players during the final few months of the season. His offers include Florida, Miami, Maryland, Ole Miss and UCF. He's a project, but I'm betting that he performs really well at the next level.

Amari Niblack, an athlete from Lakewood High School in Clearwater, Florida.
Amari Niblack, an athlete from Lakewood High School in Clearwater, Florida.

TE/FLEX: Amari Niblack, Lakewood

Preseason pick: Niblack

A lot of solid options in that tight end/wide receiver hybrid mold in the class of 2022 (Gulliver Prep's DeCarlo Donaldson, Berkeley Prep's CJ Hawkins, etc.), but I'll stick with the Alabama signee. A super athletic 6-foot-4, 225-pounder, Niblack caught 60 passes for 939 yards and 10 touchdowns and helped lead the Spartans to a regional title.

Jayden Gibson signals to an official during West Orange’s game at Apopka on Sept. 3, 2021.

WR Jayden Gibson, West Orange

Preseason pick: Gibson

Gibson is the highest-ranked wide receiver on the USA Today Florida Network's top 100 and played like in 2021. The 6-foot-5 Oklahoma signee caught 56 passes for 857 yards and 13 touchdowns.

WR Quan Lee, Buchholz

Preseason pick: C.J. Smith, Bishop Moore

Despite suffering a shoulder injury during the season, Lee was his typical dynamic self. The UCF signee caught 48 passes for 928 yards and 10 touchdowns, rushed for 226 yards and three scores and also is an outstanding kick returner.

Dillard wide receiver Devaughn Mortimer flipped to Louisville during the early signing period.

WR Devaughn Mortimer, Dillard

Preseason pick: Devaughn Mortimer, Dillard

Again, no reason to change the preseason selection. The 5-foot-11, 178-pound slot receiver helped the Panthers go 9-1 during the regular season and his 90-yard touchdown catch against St. Thomas Aquinas was one of the biggest highlights of the 2021 season.

Monsignor Pace High School's (FL) Shemar Stewart is among the nation's premier high school football players.

DE Shemar Stewart, Monsignor Pace

Preseason pick: Stewart

The 6-foot-6, 272-pounder is such an impressive blend of size, strength and speed. Considered one of the premier players nationally in the class of 2022, Stewart has narrowed his finalists to Georgia, Miami and Texas A&M and will announce on National Signing Day.

DL Jamari Lyons, Viera

Preseason pick: Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy, Lakeland

Lyons had a monster season for the Hawks. The Florida signee recorded 103 tackles, which is a truly impressive number for an interior lineman. He also had 37 tackles for loss, 13 sacks and three forced fumbles in 10 games.

Ocoee defensive lineman Jordan Phillips signed with Tennessee.
Ocoee defensive lineman Jordan Phillips signed with Tennessee.

DL Jordan Phillips, Ocoee

Preseason pick: Jordan Phillips, Ocoee

Phillips is another holdover from the preseason team. The 6-foot-4, 285-pound Tennessee signee can stop the run and also rush the passer. He finished the season with 56 tackles, 29 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks and 18 quarterback hurries.

Chaminade-Madonna's Kenyatta Jackson Jr. (2) chases down a Berkeley Prep player to tackle him. Chaminade-Madonna shutout Berkeley Prep 21-0 to claim the 3A State Championship title at Gene Cox Stadium on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021.

DE Kenyatta Jackson Jr., Chaminade Madonna

Preseason pick: Marvin Jones Jr., American Heritage

The Gatorade Florida Football Player of the Year was a force for the Class 3A state champion Lions. Jackson had 78 tackles and 18 sacks in 12 games. The Ohio State signee is No. 13 on the USA Today Florida Network's top 100.

LB Jack Pyburn, Bolles

Preseason pick: Travious Lathan, Gulliver Prep

The 6-foot-4, 265-pound Pyburn likely moves to an edge rusher in college, but primarily played linebacker for the Bulldogs and was a force. He recorded 109 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 14 sacks and 16 hurries. Pyburn, a former Minnesota commit, is deciding between Auburn and Miami.

DeMario Tolan is a linebacker from Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando.
DeMario Tolan is a linebacker from Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando.

LB DeMario Tolan, Dr. Phillips

Preseason pick: Tolan

The All-American linebacker and LSU signee remains on the all-recruit team after a strong senior season at Dr. Phillips. The 6-foot-1, 211-pounder is fast, athletic and has the ability to come downhill against the run and also drop into coverage.

2022 linebacker Omar Graham Jr. signed with FSU during the early signing period.
2022 linebacker Omar Graham Jr. signed with FSU during the early signing period.

LB Omar Graham, Stranahan

Preseason pick: Wesley Bissainthe, Central

The Florida State signee did everything for Stranahan in 2021. He rushed for more than 550 yards and 12 touchdowns, but his biggest contributions came on defense. Graham had 102 tackles -- 76 solo -- to go along with 40 tackles for loss, 23.5 sacks and 40 quarterback hurries.

CB Jaheim Singletary, Riverside

Preseason pick: Singletary

The Georgia signee and No. 2 overall player on the USA Today Florida Network's top 100 was outstanding once again. Singletary recorded 28 tackles to go along with four interceptions and seven passes defended.

Seminole cornerback Ja'Cari Henderson
Seminole cornerback Ja'Cari Henderson

CB Ja'Cari Henderson, Seminole

Preseason pick: Cam Miller, Trinity Christian

The UCF signee has the length (6-foot-2), athletic ability and attitude that colleges covet. Henderson finished the season with 27 tackles, two tackles for loss, two interceptions, blocked two kicks and also is a solid kick returner. There are higher-ranked cornerbacks, but Henderson is special.

Naples’ Devin Moore announces his commitment to play college football at Florida, Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2021, at Naples High School in Naples, Fla.

S Devin Moore, Naples

Preseason pick: Kamari Wilson, IMG

With Tyler Booker being our IMG representative, we'll take Wilson's new teammate at Florida. Moore is a big safety at 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, Moore recorded 38 tackles, three tackles for loss, broke up 11 passes and recovered four fumbles in 2021.

Boone athlete JaCorey Thomas
Boone athlete JaCorey Thomas

S JaCorey Thomas, Boone

Preseason pick: Thomas

No reason to change the preseason pick. A Swiss army knife in the secondary, Thomas can do a little bit of everything and he does it all at a high level. The Georgia signee had 77 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, two interceptions and four forced fumbles.

K Robert Gunn III, Pinellas Park

Preseason pick: Gunn III

The Clemson signee wasn't perfect this season. Gunn missed one field goal and had one kickoff returned. That's it. He finished the season 3 for 4 on field goals with a long of 57 yards, connected on all 18 of his extra points and had 20 touchbacks on 21 kickoffs.

P Evan Crenshaw, Nease

Preseason pick: Crenshaw

The All-American averaged 39.4 yards per kick and had 15 of his 36 punts downed inside the 20-yard line. The Coastal Carolina signee played a key role on a Nease team that made an eight-win improvement and reached the regional championship game in 2021.

Azareye'h Thomas pushes away a Stingrays defender during the Niceville Atlantic Coast playoff football game at Niceville. The Eagles won 20-6.

ATH Azareye'h Thomas

Preseason pick: Sam McCall, Lake Gibson

Thomas did everything for the Eagles in 2021. The Florida State signee rushed for 421 yards, caught 33 passes for 438 yards and scored 17 total touchdowns. Thomas also intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble.
