Florida Highway Patrol trooper strikes, kills pedestrian 'lying in the middle' of West Orange Avenue

A Florida State Highway Patrol trooper struck and killed a pedestrian "who was lying in the middle of the" road in southwest Tallahassee Saturday night, according to FHP Master Cpl. Patricia Jefferson-Shaw

The trooper was traveling eastbound on Orange Avenue around 10:40 p.m. when he hit the 29-year-old man who was "was lying in a prone position upon the eastbound lane of Orange Avenue," read an FHP narrative of the incident.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and Orange Avenue, in the area of Lake Bradford Road, was closed during the initial hours of the investigation.

Jefferson-Shaw said FHP is heading the investigation. She did not know if the trooper, 28, was placed on leave.
