Surely you’ve heard by now of the mythical Florida Man, a composite of every naked ne’er-do-well from the Sunshine State who engages in various illicit activities and inevitably gets busted. We laugh at Florida Man’s headlines because they’re ridiculous, but the truth is his hijinks usually happen at the expense of hapless victims. Those Florida Man tales are dark. No need to celebrate them here.

Instead, we’re using this space to toast to the other, better kind of Florida Man: the resourceful DIYer who MacGyvers his way into and out of situations, almost certainly breaking the law, but never his resolve. He’s a walking, talking embodiment of “Hold My Beer.” His exploits aren’t always harmless, but they’re never not inspiring.

And sometimes, Florida Man does actual good—not just Florida good, but the heroic, save-an-old-lady-from-a-burning-building kind of good. He deserves a hearty salute.
