Florida man dies after golf cart hits tree, ejecting him into nearby pond: Officials

A Florida man died after a golf cart crash sent him flying into a pond at an RV park, officials say.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the incident occurred Saturday morning near Clover Leaf Forest RV Resort in Brooksville, Florida, approximately 50 miles north of Tampa.

According a local FHP office, a 74-year-old Brooksville man was driving a cart on a golf cart trail near Meetinghouse Lane near the resort when he suffered a medical emergency. The golf cart went off the trail and struck a tree, causing him to be "ejected" from the cart and into a nearby pond, the statement said.

FHP said he died at the scene of the incident.

The Medical Examiner's Office, Districts 5 & 24, identified the man as Michael Severs and said he died by asphyxia or suffocation. His death has been ruled as accidental.

A corporate representative of Clover Leaf Farms community which encompasses the RV park, emailed USA TODAY the following statement:

"We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred on Saturday involving a resident of the community. We appreciate the efforts of the first responders who were on site to render aid," said spokesperson Jennifer Ludovice.
