Florida man gets 6 years in prison after plea agreement for 2022 Johnson City shooting

A Florida man originally charged with attempted murder and other felonies for a 2022 shooting in Johnson City will spend six years in prison after pleading guilty to a lesser charge.

Jaeden Cunningham, of Cocoa, Florida, was accused of shooting a 49-year-old man in his vehicle in late October 2022.

Cunningham was initially charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree attempted assault, second-degree and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and first-degree criminal use of a firearm, all felonies.

In August, Cunningham pleaded guilty to first-degree attempted assault, also a felony, with a sentence cap of nine years.

In Broome County Court last week, Judge Joseph Cawley sentenced Cunningham to six years in state prison and five years of post-release supervision.

Johnson City police said Cunningham got upset with a driver for a ride-sharing service during a ride, and began to assault the victim inside the vehicle before exiting and shooting the driver multiple times.

The victim was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers apprehended Cunningham a short time later. He had a 9mm Taurus handgun in his possession at the time of his arrest, police said, and investigators recovered numerous 9mm shell casings at the scene of the shooting.

Cunningham has been in custody at the Broome County jail since his arrest.
