'Florida Man' meme rises to new heights: 2024 Florida Man Games coming to St. Augustine

Floridians are strange. Some of us say things like “jiffy feet,” we ask Google questions like “What do I do if there’s a gator in my yard?” and we’re known nationwide for spawning the “Florida man.” And now, there’s a chance for Florida men everywhere to prove themselves worthy of the name.

If you haven’t been paying attention to news headlines within the past 10 years: “Florida Man” is not only the title of a Netflix series. It’s what we call the kind of person who would attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a hamster wheel or throw a live gator into the drive-through window at Wendy’s.

If you’re that kind of person and have four other friends who are, too, you can apply as a team to represent your county in the Florida Man Games.

If you want to watch 16 teams of Florida men compete in games like weaponized pool noodle mud dueling, an evading arrest obstacle course, a category 5 hurricane winds cash grab or beer belly Florida sumo wrestling, start planning to head to St. Augustine for the weekend of Feb. 24, 2024.

Has Florida ever hosted the Olympics?

Florida has never hosted the real Olympic games, but we think the Florida Man Games could earn an honorable mention.

I mean, do the real Olympics even have a mullet contest? Or chicken coop bingo? No, but the Florida Man Games do.

“The Florida Man Games is where the bizarre meets brawn and sanity is optional! This isn't just a competition; it's a one-of-a-kind Floridian spectacle,” The Florida Man Games website says. “Think you can handle it? Prove it. Snag those tickets NOW! Because like Florida’s summer storms, they’re here one minute and gone the next.”

The Florida Man Games will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024.

How much are tickets for the Florida Man Games?

Tickets to the Florida Man Games are about $50 for general admission and $155 for VIP tickets, which include drinks, access to a climate-controlled VIP area, access to air-conditioned bathrooms and reserved bleacher seating for the Florida Man Games.

How do you play the Florida Man Games?

If you and four friends are interested in applying to represent your county in the 2024 Florida Man Games, you have until Nov. 30, 2023, to do so.

You’ll have to come up with a team name, designate a team leader, identify what county you’re representing and send a video introducing yourself with your digital application. You have to be 18 or older to apply to be a contestant.

“Submit (a) promo video telling us why your team has what it takes to represent your county in the Florida Man Games,” the website says. “The teams with the most Florida manliness have the best chance at getting an invite to the games, so make your submission GOOD!”

The winning team wins $1,000 and a chance to win another $1,000 in the Cat 5 Cash Grab event.  1st, 2nd and 3rd places all get a swag bag with another $1,000 in unannounced prizes.

Here are the events you can expect to see at the Florida Man Games in St. Augustine in February 2024

• Weaponized Pool Noodle Mud Duel – “Test your strength inside the Florida Man Games Colosseum (Massive Above Ground Pool).”

• Evading Arrest Obstacle Course – “Jump over fences, through backyards, and away from actual police officers to earn your freedom!”

• Category 5 Cash Grab – “Subject yourself to category 5 winds as you scramble to catch as much real cash as you can.”

• A Catalytic Converter, 2 Bikes and a Handful of Copper Pipes: Race Against Time – “Compete head to head in a race that lets you live a day in the life of a Florida man headline.”

• Beer Belly Florida Sumo – “Dive into the beer belly of the beast as you try to blast your opponent out of the ring.”
