Florida man slashes mother, sister to death with machete in fight over money, cops say

An argument over money led to bloodshed when a Largo man slashed his mother and sister with a machete, killing them both, police said.

On Wednesday night, Wiley Mackenzie, 49, was upset with his mother after they argued about money, Largo police said.

Later that night, Mackenzie’s father heard his wife screaming out to him from the bedroom.

When he ran over, he saw Mackenzie slashing his mother with a machete while she lay in bed. Mackenzie’s sister was also in the room and was screaming, police said. His father couldn’t stop him.

Mackenzie’s father told police Mackenzie slashed his sister’s head and neck as she tried to run out of the room. After attacking his mother and sister, Mackenzie looked over to his father and told him he had set him free, police said.

When police arrived at the home they arrested Mackenzie, who was drenched in blood, and took him to be medically evaluated, where police said he spontaneously called himself a murderer.

Mackenzie’s mother died in bed, but as first responders tended to his sister, she said with her dying breath that Mackenzie was the one who attacked her, then succumbed to her wounds.

Largo police did not release the names of Mackenzie’s mother, father or sister.

Mackenzie was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and was not assigned bond. He is being held in a Pinellas County jail.
