A Florida place of child’s play and parties got fined $43,000 for child labor violations

A jump-around trampoline place in Jacksonville that advertises child fun and child parties paid penalties for child labor violations.

So says the U.S. Department of Labor. And, so confirms a spokesperson for Urban Air, whose Urban Air Adventure Park franchise at 9950 Southside Blvd. in Jacksonville committed the violations.

The spokesperson said a since-departed general manager allowed 15-year-olds to work longer hours than allowed by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

“The kids requested it, but the general manager allowed it to happen,” the Urban Air spokesperson said.

Labor said its Wage and Hour Division investigators found that 55 minors, ages 14 and 15, worked after 7 p.m. on school nights. That cost Urban Air Jacksonville $43,505 in civil money penalties.

Also, Urban Air didn’t include paid break times in some workers’ weekly hour counts. So the workers didn’t get credit for passing into overtime pay range when they should have. That affected 12 workers, who received $558 or $46.50 per worker.

The Wage and Hour complaint section of Labor’s website contains information on how to file a complaint if you believe your employer has violated FLSA or other labor laws. Miami’s Wage and Hour Division office can be reached at 305-598-6607. The national helpline is 866-4US-WAGE (487-9243).
