On the latest Yahoo College Podcast, Dan Wetzel, Pete Thamel and SI's Pat Forde debate if two-loss Florida should get a look by the College Football Playoff Committee if they win the SEC title Saturday over Alabama.
DAN WETZEL: If they win against Alabama, and we'll get to that being quite a long shot, but let's say they do, are they back in? Because I see it lined up as the committee coming right out. Gary Barta saying the Florida Gators have won 9 SEC games this year. That's the all-time record for the most games, other than Alabama already having 10.
In a normal season, you only have to win 9 SEC games. If you do that, you're undefeated in the SEC, you're in. They'd be an SEC champion. They always get in. Can Florida get in with 2 losses by beating Alabama and basically bumping Ohio State right out of this and leapfrogging a Texas A&M team that defeated them?
PAT FORDE: I mean, I think they have a chance. I don't think they should, but I think it's clear by where the committee situated them that they do have a chance. And probably what they need to hope for, is for Notre Dame to beat Clemson. And then it's 2 loss Florida that has conquered Goliath, has beaten Alabama versus 2-loss Clemson, whose best win is against Miami. And then you just have to hope yeah, 1-loss A&M, who beat Florida, kind of just gets pushed to the wayside, because you have the big win over Alabama. So could they? Yes. Should they? No.
PETE THAMEL: I don't think they can. I mean, when you dial in on their resume, they have one top 25 win over Georgia, who's good, but no one here's standing on the table for Georgia. Now Georgia has gotten better since they finally transitioned from Stetson Bennett. So you'd have to keep Alabama and Florida in the playoff at that point, right?
PAT FORDE: Yeah.
PETE THAMEL: I would take 2-loss Clemson over Florida. I don't even think it's close.
DAN WETZEL: It could also be 2-loss Florida over undefeated Notre, I mean, Ohio State.
PAT FORDE: No, I don't, I don't see that happening.
PETE THAMEL: That's not happening, no.
DAN WETZEL: I mean, they got 9 wins against 6, and they beat Alabama.
PAT FORDE: I mean, it would a debate, it would be a debate. They would have beaten Alabama, they would have beaten Georgia. Ohio State would have beaten Northwestern and Indiana. I mean, the wins would be better for Florida, but they also would have lost 2 games, including one to a team with a losing record.
PETE THAMEL: They also played the games.
PAT FORDE: I know.
DAN WETZEL: When you only drop to seven, you're saying something.
PAT FORDE: No, I know.
DAN WETZEL: No one will care about the loss. I think Ohio State should be in the playoff, but I just think they.
