Florida records 148,758 new COVID-19 cases in 2 weeks

There were 148,758 new coronavirus cases recorded over the last two weeks among Florida residents, bringing the cumulative total to 6,345,663. With 506 more fatalities on record, 75,096 Florida residents have died.

The death total over the last two weeks reflects an increase from the 260 reported in the two weeks prior, but deaths can take several days or weeks to be reported. Many newly reported deaths are of people who died before the last two weeks.

The number of cases over the last two weeks increased compared to the 138,657 reported in the two weeks prior. Positivity increased from 16.2% to 17.2%. That’s for new cases only and excludes anyone who previously tested positive.

Of note, the state reports deal only with Florida resident cases and exclude non-residents cases, which are no longer available.

Across the state, 3,890 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 from June 8 to 14, according to the latest White House report. In comparison, 3,040 were hospitalized two weeks ago. Four weeks ago, it was 1,934.

Statewide, 15,339,625 residents, or 74% of people age 5 and up, have received at least one vaccination shot, including 8,005,006 who have completed their shot regimens but not received an additional dose through June 16. Meanwhile, 22,102 received an additional dose this week, bringing the total to 5,219,043.

Central Florida added 30,643 resident infections over the last two weeks, based on the actual date the state opened the case, for a total of 1,245,450: 9,884 more in Orange for 408,844; 2,776 more in Osceola for 122,550; 5,104 more in Polk for 214,433; 2,124 more in Lake for 91,543; 572 more in Sumter for 23,920; 3,460 more in Volusia for 125,956; 4,010 more in Brevard for 145,889; and 2,713 more in Seminole for 112,315.
