Florida Southern in Lakeland hosts event with authors of book about L.B. Brown

The Lawton M. Chiles Center for Florida History at Florida Southern College will host a talk Thursday at 6 p.m. dedicated to Lawrence B. Brown. The event will be held in the McKay Archives.

Charles B. Warren, author of the book, “From Slavery to Community Builder: The Story of Lawrence B. Brown,” will appear, along with historian Canter Brown Jr., who contributed a chapter to the book. They will be joined by Clifton Lewis, who organizes the annual L.B. Brown Heritage Festival in Bartow.

L.B. Brown, born into enslavement in Alachua County, settled in Bartow as an adult and became a successful entrepreneur. He built several houses, including one that has been restored and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Copies of the book will be available for cash purchases — $25 for paperback and $35 for hardcover.
