Florida State baseball: Seminoles drop 11-10 slugfest to Florida Gulf Coast

For the second straight game, Florida State (7-3) dropped an offensive slugfest to FGCU (10-1), falling 11-10 in front of 5,038 fans at Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles had 16 hits in the contest – including three from McGwire Holbrook, making his FSU debut – but a ninth-inning home run for the Eagles broke a 10-10 tie and proved to be the winning run.

Holbrook, a transfer from West Virginia, saw just 10 pitches over his five at-bats, finishing 3-for-5 with an RBI single and a two-run double. Colton Vincent extended his hitting streak to 14 games with two hits, and Treyton Rank had a pair of singles from the leadoff spot. Vincent and Rank both singled in the ninth inning, but LJ McDonough earned his second save of the weekend by forcing a fielder’s choice to end the contest.

OF NOTE:

  • West Virginia transfer McGwire Holbrook made his Seminole debut after dealing with a hand injury suffered in preseason camp. He started as the designated hitter and hit an RBI single on the second pitch he saw; he added a two-run double on his third pitch as a Seminole, finishing 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored.

  • Colton Vincent extended his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games, the longest for a Seminole since 2018 and the sixth-longest over the last 10 seasons. He gave FSU a 7-6 lead with a fifth-inning double, already matching his doubles total from a season ago (6 in 10 games in 2023; 6 in 58 games in 2022). Vincent and Jordan Carrion are tied for the team lead with six doubles this year.

  • Freshman Ben Barrett started for the second straight game and hit an RBI single to get FSU on the board. He has three RBI and four runs combined in his two starts.

  • Freshman second baseman Titan Kamaka made his first career start. Kamaka and Holbrook are the 10th and 11th Noles to start their first career game at FSU this season.

  • Seven Seminoles had multiple hits – Holbrook, Barrett, Vincent, Cam Smith, Jaime Ferrer, Treyton Rank and Jordan Carrion. Carrion is now hitting .415 with six doubles and two triples on the year.

  • After his 21-game on-base streak ended Friday night, Ferrer singled twice and drew a walk Saturday.

  • Jamie Arnold set a career-high in strikeouts for the second time this week: the freshman had four against USF Wednesday and five Saturday against the Eagles. Ryan Denison struck out a career-high five hitters.

  • James Tibbs III threw out a runner at the plate to end the third inning. It was his third career outfield assist, and the fourth for FSU this season. He singled in the sixth inning and has reached safely in 52 of his 55 career starts.

  • Treyton Rank has reached safely in a career-high 11 straight games after singling in his final two at-bats.
