Florida State football: Seminoles ranked in Coaches, AP polls for first time in four years

For the first time in 1,498 days (214 weeks) Florida State football fans can look at an AP Poll and smile.

The Seminoles (4-0, 2-0 ACC) are crawling back into national relevance following a 44-14 victory over Boston College Saturday.

They have won nine of their past 12 games and earned the No. 23 ranking in the newest AP poll released Sunday.

Florida State was ranked No. 22 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. It was also the programs first appearance in the poll since 2018.

The program is 4-0, its best start since the 2015 season when it began 6-0.

FSU last appeared in the AP Poll rankings in the 2018 preseason. The program was ranked 19th, two spots ahead of UCF. Alabama was of course ranked No. 1.

The Seminoles received 85 votes and were the second team among programs that just missed the cut for being ranked last week.

Both Florida (2-2, 0-2 SEC) and Miami (2-2), who were ranked No. 20 and No. 25 respectively, fell from the poll after suffering their second loss of the season Saturday.

FSU joins Clemson (No. 5), NC State (No. 10), Wake Forest (No. 22) and Pittsburgh (No. 24) as ACC teams ranked.

The Seminoles host the Demon Deacons at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the first ranked matchup at Doak Campbell Stadium since Sept. 3, 2018.

No. 20 Virginia Tech knocked off Florida State 34-3 that week in Willie Taggart's FSU debut. The Seminoles finished the season 5-7, giving them their first losing season since 1976 and missing a bowl game for the first time since 1981.

Clemson is No. 5 in the USA Today poll, with NC State (No. 10), Wake Forest (No. 21), Pittsburgh (No. 24) and Syracuse (No. 25) also ranked.
