Florida Surpasses 500,000 Coronavirus Cases; 7,627 Deaths

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida surpassed 500,000 confirmed coronavirus cases on Wednesday as health officials reported a total of 502,739 cases of the virus, an increase of 5,409 cases over the previous 24-hour period.

Florida health officials reported a total of 7,627 deaths from the virus as of Wednesday from 7,402 deaths a day earlier. Many of the test sites in the state were shut down last weekend ahead of then Hurricane Isaias but it was not clear how the temporary shutdown affected the total number of cases in the state. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said earlier that some test results have have taken as long as 10 to 14 days.

Health officials reported 28,573 hospitalizations, up from 27,952 hospitalizations over the previous 24 hours. That represents an increase of 621 more hospitalizations than reported a day earlier, which marks one of the highest one-day increases in hospitalizations since the start of the pandemic.
