Floridamancharged in fatal Hartford crash was driving over 100 mph, police say

Jul. 17—A state police affidavit states that Ellison-Moss was still going at least 75 mph when it struck a Can-Am Spyder driven by 35-year-old Luis Gonzalez, causing Gonzalez to be ejected from the vehicle and then run over.

On July 12, Ellison-Moss was charged with second-degree manslaughter, misconduct with a motor vehicle, first-degree reckless endangerment, following too closely and reckless driving. He had previously been charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence.

He is being held in lieu of a $250,000 bond, and is scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court on Aug. 21.

According to police, the charges date back to an accident that took place in the early hours of June 11, 2022, on the Exit 86 off-ramp of Route 5/15. State police who arrived at the scene located Gonzalez in the roadway, unresponsive and suffering from life threatening injuries.

State police said Ellison-Moss reported driving behind the motorcycle, when it abruptly began to slow down. Although he slammed on his brakes, he wasn't able to stop in time and drove on top of the motorcycle, according to a police affidavit.

While speaking with Ellison-Moss, troopers noticed the smell of alcohol, and conducted a field sobriety tests, which were not performed to standard, according to the affidavit. Ellison-Moss was charged that day with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs.

In the following days ,police examined data from Ellison-Moss's rental vehicle, which showed that he was driving 107 mph five seconds before the accident, and he didn't apply the brake until less than two second before the accident, the affidavit states. Gonzalez was estimated to be traveling between 61 and 75 mph before the accident.

State police said an analysis of the collision revealed that the low profile of the Can-Am resulted in Ellison-Moss's vehicle partially driving over the top of the motorcycle.

It also revealed that after Gonzalez was ejected, he slid along the road, and was run over and dragged by Ellison-Moss's vehicle, according to the affidavit.
