Florida's COVID-19 crisis easing; Friday's report adds 3,815 cases and 89 deaths

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Florida health officials on Friday reported 3,815 new COVID-19 cases and the deaths of another 89 residents from the disease.

These daily totals follow a downward trend in infections and fatalities for a state that has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.

“We have seen a real significant decline in coronavirus prevalence in the state of Florida,” Gov. Ron DeSantis told reporters Friday, during an event at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. “This has been going on now for weeks and weeks. And South Florida, although they had the more significant outbreaks, they’ve also had the steepest declines … the trend has been unmistakable.”

The state Department of Health says 10,957 residents and 142 nonresidents have died from COVID-19 during the pandemic.
