Florists prep for busy Valentine’s Day period

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Valentine’s Day is one of the busiest times of year for florists, and those around Western New York are prepping for the period.

Maureen Bartley has been working with her passion for flowers for more than 50 years, and her shop, Buffalo Wholesale Flower Market, has been located in the heart of downtown Buffalo for 28 years.

Every Valentine’s Day, the market spreads thousands of flowers throughout Erie County, and their preparation for this year is already in full bloom.

“I can remember as a little girl picking an iris at my grandparent’s farm and just being delighted with flowers as a child, and picking water lilies at our cottage, and stuff like that,” Bartley said. “It’s just been a real love all my life.”

Market workers say customers are in and out of the shop all day during the holiday and they’ll have eight to ten trucks on the road for deliveries. Bartley said the market has not seen much of a price rise, however.

“There’s been tiny increases but we have been able to hold our prices pretty much the same as they were every other year, mostly our dozen-pack roses which are a big cash and carry special are still $25 a dozen,” Bartley said.

Now if you’re wondering what type of flowers to get your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day, they say red roses are the most popular as they sell nearly 1,500 on the holiday. However, if red roses seem too traditional, they have many other options to choose from.

“We have a lot of cool unique flowers this time of year,” market manager Davante Walker said. “Got these blue roses, these tulips and things like that, something to change it up.”

“A lot of people don’t want roses or the typical flowers that people get,” Bartley said. “A lot of people want something in a mixed bouquet or they have a favorite sunflower or something so people get all different choices.”

They recommend getting your orders as soon as possible to make sure your loved one gets the perfect floral gift. For more information on Maureen’s Buffalo Wholesale Flower Market, click here.
