Flour Bluff High School students named 2022 KEDT Challenge champions

Flour Bluff High School students were awarded a trophy for their KEDT Challenge victory against Calallen.

The season 17 Challenge cup was presented to the students by KEDT-TV on Friday. The team, consisting of five students, was one among 24 high schools.

The televised competition involves teams of five who compete three at a time. The students are asked questions about language arts, science, math, social studies, fine arts and a general category of South Texas history and facts, films, television, religion and sports.

Students are expected to be knowledgeable in multiple fields and to think fast.

Flour Bluff teacher Beth Huckabee has coached the Flour Bluff team for all 17 seasons of the competition. The victory marked her 51st game.

"It's a great opportunity to emphasize the wide range of knowledge that kids need these days," Huckabee said on the show. "For me, it's just a whole lot of fun watching these guys compete and succeed and learn from failure."

The Challenge champions are Kyle Pshigoda, Daniel Santos, Carlos Doble, Brannon Champman and Jared Martin.

"I'd like to thank our admin for supporting us and making all this possible," Huckabee said. "I'd like to thank my partner-in-crime, Michelle, for being my go-to and question reader when I'm too nervous to do that, and the kids really put themselves into this and worked really hard for this."

According to the KEDT website, college scholarships totaling $28,000 were awarded to the top contestants.

"The fact that we can use those scholarships from A&M Kingsville, from Del Mar, and from A&M Corpus Christi and give those away to deserving kids in our school is really cool," Huckabee said.
