Floyd lifts Windsor boys

Jan. 13—Quintin Floyd and the Windsor High boys basketball team have already faced stiff tests against top in-state competition and a challenging game against Rhode Island's Classical.

The Warriors were faced with another test Thursday when it was pitted against Springfield Central of Massachusetts at the 2023 Hoophall Classic.

Floyd made sure his team came out on top.

The junior finished with a triple-double of 11 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists as Windsor topped the Golden Eagles 70-50 at Springfield College.

Windsor (9-1), which was ranked third in this week's GameTimeCT/New Haven Register state media poll, trailed 10-7 early on Thursday.

But the Warriors outscored the Golden Eagles (6-2) 13-6 over the final 2:36 of the first quarter, taking the lead on Jakeel Martin's three-pointer with 1:46 left in the quarter.

Windsor led by as many as eight in the second quarter en-route to taking a 36-29 lead into the half.

Floyd had four points, six rebounds and four assists in the first half. Teammate Rashawn Tibby added seven points and five rebounds in the first 16 minutes.

An 8-0 run to begin the second half stretched the Warriors' lead to 15 points. Springfield Central chipped away a bit, but trailed by 11, 53-42 after three.

Tibby finished the game with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds while adding four steals and three blocks.

Teammate Anthony Williams scored a team-high 14 points while Martin and Gyan Davis each contributed 12 points.

The Warriors outscored Springfield Central 48-28 in the paint and scored 21 points off 21 Golden Eagles turnovers. In comparison, Springfield Central scored nine points off 15 Windsor turnovers.

Windsor also had 28 second-chance points compared to 14 for the Golden Eagles.

Sophomore Shaun'Dez Buckhannon paced Springfield Central with 11 points. Max Lockett added nine points and seven rebounds while Jayden Bass grabbed 11 rebounds.

In other boys action on the Day 1 of the Hoophall Classic Thursday, No. 2 Northwest Catholic fell to Newton North (Mass.) 67-59 in double overtime, Wilbraham & Monson (Mass.) topped Suffield Academy 77-48, Pope Francis (Mass.) edged Longmeadow (Mass.) 62-58, and Springfield International (Mass.) defeated Putnam Vocational (Mass.) 66-45.

It's a short turnaround for Windsor as it travels to New Britain for a CCC North game today.

WINDSOR LOCKS 69, THOMASTON 46. Malike Alasani's 14 points paced the Raiders as they earned a non-conference win in Thomaston.

The win gives Windsor Locks (6-0) six consecutive wins to begin the season.

Thomaston (2-6) led 15-9 after a quarter but the visitors responded, outscoring the Golden Bears 40-15 across the middle two quarters to take control of the game.

Seven of Alasani's points came in the third quarter. Teammate Austin Smith finished with 13 points while Sincere Monroe contributed 11 and Kyle Hinckley added 10.

Mark Ayoub led the hosts with 14 points while Maddox Lahey chipped in 10.

The Raiders return to NCCC play Tuesday when they entertain Ellington.
