Even though the holiday season is nearly done and over with, the flu season is here to stay for a while.

Much like every year, health officials are urging the public to get the influenza vaccine as winter gets into full swing.

This year, flu activity has been increasing in the state since early December and current activity is high, according to the Ohio Department of Health. Additionally, the department reported Friday Ohio's first flu-related death of the season; a 9-year-old girl in Clermont County.

“If you haven’t gotten a flu vaccine, now is a good time,” department of health director Bruce Vanderhoff said in a statement. “We are in the heart of flu season, and a vaccine may help prevent you or your loved ones from contracting a serious case of the disease.”

As Vanderhoff alluded to, vaccines are an effective way to avoid contracting and spreading the flu virus. They are available at most health care providers’ offices, local health departments and retail pharmacies.

With peak flu activity usually lasting until February, according to the CDC, here are some places in Greater Cincinnati where you can get vaccinated:

What are flu symptoms?

Health officials say flu symptoms are typically intense and occur suddenly. Common symptoms include:

  • Fever.

  • Headache.

  • Extreme tiredness.

  • Dry cough.

  • Runny or stuffy nose.

  • Muscle aches.

  • Nausea.

  • Vomiting.

  • Diarrhea, which is usually more common in children.
