Fluffed and festive, pets (and owners) will flock to Palm Beach for annual parade

It will be raining cats and dogs on Saturday.

All right, it will mainly be dogs but costumed pets and their owners will pack the island at the 30th annual Worth Avenue Pet Parade.

Organizer Sherry Frankel of Sherry Frankel's Melangerie said she expects some cats to be there along with bunnies, a kimono dragon and, of course, local pig celebrity Mona Lisa. But the vast majority are dogs of all sizes and shapes.

"It's a fun event," she said. "[People] like to show off their pets."

Categories are large pets (over 36 pounds), medium (16 to 35 pounds) and small (up to 15 pounds). Subcategories include best in show, most unique, most creative and most obedient. The larger animals traditionally go first because, Frankel has said, they don't do as well as their smaller counterparts waiting in the heat during the three-hour event.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at Via Amore (by 256 Worth Ave.) with the contest starting at 10.

Winners in each category in class will receive prizes from area businesses including at Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa and The Colony as well as gift certificates to area restaurants and businesses. For more information, contact Frankel at 561-655-1996 or at faith@worth-avenue.com.
