Fly strips hanging above cookline, expired food, mildew in Myrtle Beach area restaurants

Each week the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control visits area grocery stores, mobile food units, retail food establishments and more.

These visits are unannounced routine inspections. Some are follow-up inspections due to low scores in the previous 10 day period, which are also unannounced.

The reason for the inspections are to make sure establishments are in compliance with SC regulations and guidelines.

R | Indicates a Routine Inspection - Unannounced and conducted on a frequency determined by the facility’s Risk Category on a frequency of one to four times a year.

F | Indicates a Follow-Up Inspection - Conducted within 10 days of a Routine Inspection that requires follow-up verification.

The following restaurants had unannounced follow-up inspections (from previous week June 19 - 23) this week June 26 - June 30, 2023.

  1. Country Corner #7 located at 710 E. Brooks Road, Andrews, had a routine inspection on June 19 and scored 84 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report. Country Corner #7 has no record of a follow-up inspection as of this time.

  2. Inlet Provision Company located at 4891 U.S. 17 Business, Murrells Inlet, had a routine inspection on June 20 and scored 78 percent “B” score. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade report. The Retail Food Establishment Report. Inlet Provision Company had a follow-up inspection on June 30 and scored 89 percent “A” grade.

  3. Joeys Doggs located at 1818 U.S. 17 N., Surfside Beach, had a routine inspection on June 22 and scored 84 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report. Joeys Doggs had a follow-up inspection on June 30 and scored 96 percent “A” grade.

  4. Snooky’s Oceanfront located at 2208 N. Ocean Blvd., North Myrtle Beach, had a routine inspection on June 21 and scored 84 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report. Snooky’s Oceanfront had a follow-up inspection on June 29 and scored 89 percent “A” grade.

The following restaurants had unannounced routine inspections June 26 - 30, 2023.

  1. American Steak & Oyster Bar located at 3797 U.S. 17 Bus. Murrells Inlet, had a routine inspection on June 28 and scored 80 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report listed the following: “Observed a knife stored in the cook line hand sin.k. Observed the slicer, stored as clean, soiled with grime. Ready-to-eat foods, prepared and held beyond 24 hours, with date marking exceeding 7 days. Chemical spray bottles not labeled with their contents, household pesticides in the kitchen. Observed multiple scoops without handles. Observed an unapproved outdoor smoker. Observed rough floor surfaces in the kitchen that are no longer easily cleanable.” A follow-up inspection is to be performed within 10 days, according to the SC Food Grade Report.

  2. Atlas Tap House located at 1004 Chester St., Myrtle Beach, had a routine inspection on June 30 and scored 84 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report listed the following: “Observed foods prepared and held beyond 24 hours, with date marking exceeding 7 days. Pimento cheese (June 15), brisket ( June 16), pork belly (June 13), chicken wings (June 8). Observed hole/gaps around the back door. Observed boxes of food not stored at least 6 inches off of the floor. Observed a residential refrigerator, in use, in the back kitchen area. Build-up in corners of the 3-compartment sink. Observed splash residue in the cook line microwave. Observed soiled shelving in the kitchen. Men’s restroom does not have a door between the urinal area and the dining room.” A follow-up inspection is to be performed within 10 days, according to the SC Food Grade Report.

  3. Crab Daddy’s Calabash Seafood located at 3043 U.S. 17 S., Murrells Inlet, had a routine inspection on June 27 and scored 71 percent “C” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report listed the following: “The hand sink in the prep area does not have paper towels readily available. The facility cannot provide shell stock tags for the last 90 days. Buffet items are not being held under proper time control at this time. Observed undercooked steak available for service on the buffet. The facility does not have a consumer advisory for buffet items. Observed chemicals stored alongside clean equipment. Observed food thawing in the walk-in freezer. The food is below 41 degrees at this time. Observed food thawing at room temperature in the prep area. These products are not under cold running water at this time. Observed fly sticks installed over the cook line. Observed evidence of rodents. Rodent droppings observed during the inspection. Boxes of food stored on the floor, under shelving, in the walk-in freezer. Observed cookies held for service on the buffet. These cookies are not fully protected by the sneeze guard. The facility does not have a chlorine-based testing device, with a colored measuring guide, to measure chlorine-based sanitizer. Observed heavily worn floor grout, holding water, in the dish area. Observed standing water behind the cook line. Observed gasoline-powered landscaping equipment stored alongside food and single-use items in the dry storage room. Observed the facility operating cook line equipment without hood filters in place. Failure to correct may result in “C” grade remaining posted.” A follow-up inspection is to be performed within 10 days, according to the SC Food Grade Report.

  4. Golden Kitchen located at 820 Surfside Dr., Surfside Beach had a routine inspection on June 28 and scored 80 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report listed the following: “ No paper towels readily available at the only hand sink in the kitchen. Observed foods, prepared and held beyond 24 hours, without any date marking. Observed chemicals stored on the 3-compartment sink drainboard, in close proximity to food and clean equipment. Observed egg rolls cooling in the kitchen at room temperature. The product did not meet proper cooling rate. Observed food thawing in standing water at the 3-compartment sink. The back screen door does not fully self close and is not tight-fitting. Observed in-use scoops without handles, a scoop with the handle submerged in the product. Failure to correct may result in downgrading.” A follow-up inspection is to be performed within 10 days, according to the SC Food Grade Report.

  5. Mulligan’s located at 1359 U.S. 17, Little River had a routine inspection on June 26 and scored 82 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report listed the following: “Hand washing Sinks Minimum Temperature. Hand sink faucet damaged and no hot water available for use. Observed several cleaning items stored in hand sink. Observed cleaner stored with food items. Observed tongs stored on lower oven handles. Observed bare wood shelf in kitchen. Observed refrigerator with damaged door. Soiled corners of three-compartment sink. Grease buildup on sides and surfaces of cook line equipment. Observed unclean floor surfaces in kitchen and under equipment. Observed soiled floor surface in walk in cooler.” A follow-up inspection is to be performed within 10 days, according to the SC Food Grade Report.

  6. Panera Bread #4964 located at 1296 U.S. 17 N., N. Myrtle Beach had a routine inspection on June 28 and scored 85 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report listed the following: “Employee observed changing gloves without washing hands first. Ice machine observed with buildup of mildew. Sanitizer in sanitizer buckets over appropriate range of 272 to 700. Fruit flies present in kitchen. Debris observed on top of ware washing machine. Backflow preventers not present on coffee and tea machines.” A follow-up inspection is to be performed within 10 days, according to the SC Food Grade Report.

  7. Walk-On’s Bistreaux located at 61 Rodeo Drive, Myrtle Beach had a routine inspection on June 30 and scored 82 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report listed the following: “No proof of parasite destruction letter available at time of inspection for salmon. Consumer advisory observed on menu for salmon. High temperature dish machine observed with water temperature not meeting the required plate temperature of 160 degrees. Ice machine observed with mildew/pink slime build up on the deflector plate. Small oven observed with carbon build-up. Spray sanitizer observed not stored in their original container not labeled with the common name of the material. Working containers of food that are not in their original containers and not easily identifiable with a common name - such as oils, flour, herbs, potato flakes, salt, spices and sugar. Ice cream scoops observed stored down in standing water. Condiment cups observed being used as scoops, no handles. Interior of coolers observed with standing water and food debris/spillage. Ice build-up observed in the ice cream freezer, ice observed to have yellowish tint. Ice build-up observed along lines in walk in freezer. Mildew observed around the faucet of the dipper well. All hand sinks observed with build-up in corners where sink basin and splash guards meet. Floor on the cook line observed with holes, exposing floor underneath. Ceiling tile/light fixture, in prep area, observed leaking. Manager stated he presumed it to be an AC/condensation leak. Spillage observed under the shelving in the walk in freezer.” A follow-up inspection is to be performed within 10 days, according to the SC Food Grade Report.

A | 100 - 88 - The retail food establishment earned more than 87 points. Food safety practices appeared to meet the requirements of Regulation 61-25.

B | 87 - 78 - The retail food establishment earned 78-87 points. Food safety practices need improvement.

C | 77 & Below - The retail establishment earned less than 78 points. Food safety practices need significant improvement.
