A year after Hurricane Ian slammed Southwest Florida and caused catastrophic damage to places like Sanibel Island, people on social media are still asking questions.

They ask if this restaurant is open. They ask if that resort is open. They ask about the beaches. They ask about the conditions for shelling. They ask: When will Sanibel Island be the same again?

No one knows for sure, but what we do know is it is going to take time. As in years. Slowly and surely the island that has become a global vacation destination is showing it is on the comeback trail.

Our visual journalist and certified drone pilot, Ricardo Rolon, took video high above Sanibel to mark the Sept. 28, 2022 anniversary of Hurricane Ian. It shows scarred landscape and blue tarps but compared to a video he took six months ago, it show more green filling in where brown used to be and progress on the damaged Sanibel Causeway.

What did Sanibel look like at the six-month anniversary of Ian?
