Flying Queens win fourth consecutive SAC tournament title

OKLAHOMA CITY — Kaitlyn Edgemon poured in 26 points and top seed Wayland Baptist beat Texas Wesleyan 85-71 Tuesday night, winning the Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament for the fourth year in a row.

Jenna Cooper had 16 points, eight assists and six rebounds as eighth-ranked Wayland (31-3) won its 12th game in a row. The Flying Queens also got 16 points and seven rebounds from Kaylee Edgemon and 14 points and 12 rebounds from Angel Hayden.

Wayland will host a four-team bracket of the NAIA Tournament's opening round March 11-12. The three teams who will join the Flying Queens will be announced at 6 p.m. Thursday on the NAIA's Facebook page.

Kertisa Amos scored 24 points for Texas Wesleyan (25-6), which was in the SAC tournament final for the first time.

Wayland led 57-54 after three quarters. After missing their first field-goal attempt of the fourth quarter, the Flying Queens made their next 13 shots from the field to open up an 85-70 lead with less than a minute left.

WOLFFORTH — Raija Todd scored 17 points and Celia Sumbane added 15 as South Plains College rallied to beat Grayson College in Wednesday's quarterfinals of the NJCAA Region V tournament at Frenship.

Viktoria Ivanova and Ashala Moseberry chipped in 12 and nine points, respectively, for the Lady Texans, who trailed by four points at halftime but came back to win their fourth game in a row.

Marta Duda led Grayson (19-12) with 14 points, followed by Daiysha Brown with 12 and Kiyara Howard-Garza with 10.

South Plains (18-8) will play a semifinal at 3 p.m. Friday against top-seeded and seventh-ranked New Mexico Junior College (26-3), which was a 79-75 winner against Weatherford College (15-11).

SPC men

South Plains College opens postseason play against Temple College at 3 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Region V tournament at Frenship.

The Texans (17-11) are the No. 2 seed from the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. The Leopards (20-10) are the No. 3 seed from the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference.

The eight-team Region V bracket consists of the top four teams from each of the two conferences. No. 8 Odessa College (25-5) is the No. 1 seed from the WJCAC, having gone undefeated through the 16-game conference schedule and winning the title by five games over South Plains.

No. 24 McLennan Community College (25-4) is the No. 1 seed from the NTJCAC and won that conference by three games over Hill College.

The South Plains-Temple winner plays a semifinal at 5 p.m. Friday against the McLennan-New Mexico Military Institute winner.
