With real playing time coming his way, NBC Sports EDGE's Steve Alexander explains why fantasy managers should keep an eye on Toronto Raptors' rookie Malachi Flynn this week and beyond.
STEVE ALEXANDER: Malachi Flynn is anything but a household name. So let me introduce you to him. He's currently the starting point guard for the Toronto Raptors since Kyle Lowry has been temporarily shut down with a foot infection, and Fred VanVleet has a strained hip flexor that will need an MRI.
Add to that the fact that the Raptors are already on the outside looking in for the playoffs, and they might just decide to pack it in for the season if things don't turn around immediately.
As for Flynn, he went off for 16 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and a 3 pointer in minutes on Friday against the Warriors. He'd literally done almost nothing up to that point in the season. And the Warriors aren't exactly a defensive juggernaut, but Flynn should be in line for 30 minutes in all five of his games this week.
Given that the Raptors have been a mess most of the season, Flynn could end up finishing up the season as a very productive player the rest of the way. And there's some risk involved in relying on a rookie at a San Diego State. But in his one meaningful game this season, he came through in a big way. And the opportunity should be there, at least through the end of this current week.
