Fnnish city unveils world's first ski-sharing program
When the roads get icy and the snow knee-deep, skiing is a fast way to get around and that is why Lahti decided to roll-out a public ski-sharing scheme, City Skis, which works in a similar way to city bike sharing.
The skis can be borrowed from one of three ski points, two in the city centre and one near the city's ski stadium where they have to be returned to after use.
Lahti is known as a winter sports city and has hosted the Nordic World Ski Championships seven times.
With a total of 180 km of cross-country skiing trails in the area, most locals are ski enthusiasts and in addition to the already existing trail network, new skiing trails have been laid out in the city centre.
Lahti is the smallest city to be awarded the EGC title with a population of 120,000 and wants to encourage people to reduce their transport-related carbon emissions.
The City of Lahti's Head of Communications Saara Piispanen said the city is aiming to become carbon neutral by 2025.
