Folk duo Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, better known as Indigo Girls, will perform at the Washington Center at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 26, and tickets go on sale this week.

The pair won a 1990 Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Recording, and received six other nominations throughout the decade. In 2019, they received a Pell Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts.

They are known for hits including “Closer to Fine,” “Shame on You” and “Power of Two.” Both also have successful solo careers outside of the band.

Their queer identities have influenced their musical careers, and the duo have been champions for LGBTQ+ rights throughout their lives, balancing advocacy with songwriting and artistry.

“We were very lucky because we came along at a time when all these icons were coming out and other people before us had paved the way,” Ray told NPR in 2020. “We were given that ability to be strong and kind of comfortably come out. … Our community of listeners kind of grew up with us.”

The duo — which is now in its 48th year — has stuck together because of their friendship and similar songwriting values, leading The Rolling Stone to describe them as “ideal duet partners.”

“People write music, and what you get out of music comes from the people, and it comes from everything that’s happened before it,” Saliers told On Being with Krista Tippett in 2019. “I love that there’s a continuum always and forevermore. That’s how we can really sponge up the entirety of human existence, is through music.”

Tickets to see the duo start at $59. Sales will open to the general public at noon Friday.
