As part of its Music Icon series, the U.S. Postal Service is set to release a stamp honoring Pete Seeger, a major influence in folk music and co-founder of the Newport Folk Festival.

The stamp shows a young Seeger, who died in 2014 at age 94, strumming on a banjo alongside the words "Pete Seeger, Folk Singer, USA."

"Seeger celebrated the unifying power of singing together and promoting the role traditional music played in addressing social and political causes," the USPS said in a prepared statement announcing the release of the stamp.

A first-day-of-issue ceremony will be held on Thursday, July 21, at Jane Pickens Theater in Newport. Tom Foti of the USPS will serve as the dedicating official and Seeger family members, including his son Dan Seeger, will be in attendance.

The event, dubbed "For Pete's Sake," is being held in partnership with the Newport Folk Festival and will benefit the Newport Festivals Foundation. After the ceremony, a concert will be held honoring the music of Seeger, whose hits include "If I Had a Hammer," "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," and "Turn! Turn! Turn!"

Spare Change: George Wein's impact on music cannot be overstated

"During his long career, the charismatic and idealistic performer became a folk hero to generations," the USPS said in the release.

Seeger performed at the inaugural Newport Folk Festival in 1959 and was paid $50. He told The Daily News in 2009 the festival was unique at the time because it mixed newcomers with established names.

"It was the kind of festival that had never been tried," he said at the time. "Folk music was taking off with groups like the Kingston Trio. And George (Wein) had had some luck with the jazz festival since, what, 1954? So there was some money around to try a folk festival.
