After controversial Christmas comments, Melania Trump unveils White House holiday decor

Weeks after controversy ensued over a recording of Melania Trump making negative remarks about decorating for Christmas, the first lady is unveiling this year's White House decorations.

In a post shared to her Twitter account Monday, Trump gave a virtual tour of the traditional decorations amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"During this special time of the year, I am delighted to share 'America the Beautiful' and pay tribute to the majesty of our great Nation. Together, we celebrate this land we are all proud to call home," she captioned the video with the hashtag #WHChristmas.

In the video, viewers can see a traditional style of decor, with plenty of Christmas trees with white lights and red ornaments.

Close-up shots in the video also revealed smaller details, including a "White House Express" train, a "Be Best" ornament and a Christmas village hospital figurine, perhaps a nod to health care workers amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In the White House Library, the decor celebrated this year's 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted American women the right to vote, with all the winning work from Trump’s 19th Amendment child art competition hosted earlier in the year displayed.

In the Blue Room, the official White House Christmas tree is displayed and showcases the country from the perspective of its children.

"Students across the country were asked to artistically depict what makes their state beautiful by highlighting the people, places, and things that capture the spirit of the state in which they call home," a press release said. "Glistening on the branches, their mini masterpieces collectively showcase America, the beautiful."

Trump also spoke to this year's theme, "America the Beautiful," in the release.

“Over the past four years I have had the honor to travel to some of our nation’s most beautiful landmarks and meet some of the most compassionate and patriotic American citizens," she said. "From coast to coast, the bond that all American’s share is an appreciation for our traditions, values, and history, which were the inspiration behind the decorations this year. Thank you to all of the staff and volunteers who worked to make sure the People’s House was ready for the holiday season. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.”

Trump stirred controversy in October over comments she made about Christmas during a secretly recorded conversation by Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, who wrote the book "Melania and Me."

The recordings included Trump expressing dismay at her role in decorating the White House during Christmas time while she was being criticized for not doing more meaningful work.

"I'm working my (butt) off with the Christmas stuff that, you know, who gives a (expletive) about Christmas stuff and decorations but I need to do it, right?" Trump is heard saying.

"And then I do it, and I say I'm working on Christmas and planning for Christmas," Trump continued. "And they say, 'What about the children that are separated?' Give me a (expletive) break."

In 2019, Trump also opted for a traditional decor style for the holidays. Last year's layout included included green Christmas trees, complete with red ornaments and blue bows for a patriotic flair, floral arrangements, a nativity scene and a gingerbread White House.

The year before, Trump was criticized for using red Christmas trees in the East Colonnade, with some critics saying it looked as if they belonged in "The Handmaid's Tale."
